Description

The journey begins as we drive from Muscat towards Nizwa, where our first stop is the iconic Nizwa Fort. Built in the 17th century, this imposing fortress is one of the finest examples of Omani architecture of its time, most famous for its massive circular tower — the largest of its kind. After exploring the fort, we continue to the bustling Nizwa Souq, a lively marketplace where you’ll find traditional khanjars (daggers), local handicrafts, silver jewellery, and, on Fridays, the fascinating cattle auction.
Our next stop is the abandoned village of Birkat Al Mauz (also known as Birkat Al Mawz or Birkat Al Mouz), whose name translates to “Banana Pool.” Once home to flourishing banana plantations, the village lies at the foothills of Jebel Akhdar and still preserves much of its old charm, with crumbling mud-brick houses and the remarkable UNESCO-listed Aflaj irrigation system. A short walk through the oasis and date plantations here offers a glimpse into the life of Oman’s past villagers.
From here, we ascend the dramatic mountainside road to Jebel Akhdar, rising 2,000 meters above sea level. The cool climate and lush greenery give the “Green Mountain” its name, and its terraced orchards are a breathtaking sight. Fed by natural springs and the ancient falaj system, these orchards yield a wide variety of fruits — peaches, apricots, figs, grapes, apples, pears, plums, almonds, walnuts — and the region is especially celebrated for its world-class pomegranates.
We visit the picturesque villages of Saiq, Wadi Bani Habib (the village of old houses), and Al Ain, each offering spectacular views of dramatic peaks, deep gorges, and winding wadis. In March and April, the mountain is filled with the fragrance of blooming roses, and visitors can witness the traditional distillation of rose water in local homes.
After a refreshing set-menu lunch at a hotel in Jebel Akhdar, we begin our descent and return to Muscat, where the tour concludes.
