One of Oman’s most popular day tours is a journey to the ancient Al Hoota Caves near Nizwa.

The tour begins with a drive from Muscat to the Nizwa region, where our first stop is the iconic Nizwa Fort. Built in the 17th century, this impressive fort is a prime example of Omani architecture, renowned for its massive circular main tower — one of the largest of its kind. After exploring the fort, we visit the lively Nizwa Souq, famous for its Friday cattle auction, intricately crafted khanjars (daggers), handicrafts, and traditional jewellery.

Next, we proceed to Al Hoota Cave, Oman’s only tourist-accessible cave. Of the 5 km long cave system, about 500 meters are open to visitors, reachable via a short ride on an electric train. Formed by centuries of water erosion, the cave features massive stalactites and stalagmites, as well as an underground lake where fish have adapted to life in darkness, losing their pigment and external eyes. Well-lit pathways guide visitors through the main chambers, accompanied by informative tours explaining the cave’s geological significance. A small geological exhibition provides additional insight into the cave’s formation and the region’s natural history.

On the return journey, we stop at the ruins of Birkat Al Mauz, an abandoned village at the foothills of Jebel Akhdar (the Green Mountains). Translating to “Banana Pool,” the village was once known for its thriving banana plantations. Today, it offers a glimpse into the lives of Omani villagers of the past and features the UNESCO-listed Falaj irrigation system. A pleasant walk through the oasis and date plantations completes the visit.

Finally, we return to Muscat, concluding a day of history, natural wonder, and cultural discovery.
